John Gill's Bible Commentary

Ver. 38. Now the man out of whom the
devils were departed , etc.] Sensible of the power of Christ, and of the favour he had received from him, was of a quite different mind from his countrymen: and besought him that he might be with him ; (See Gill on Mark 5:18). But Jesus sent him away ; from him, into the country: saying , as follows.

Matthew Henry Commentary

Verses 22-40 - Those that put to
sea in a calm, even at Christ's word, must ye prepare for a storm, and for great peril in that storm. There is n relief for souls under a sense of guilt, and fear of wrath, but to go to Christ, and call him Master, and say, I am undone, if thou dost no help me. When our dangers are over, it becomes us to take to ourselve the shame of our own fears, and to give Christ the glory of ou deliverance. We may learn much out of this history concerning the worl of infernal, malignant spirits, which though not working now exactly in the same way as then, yet all must at all times carefully guar against. And these malignant spirits are very numerous. They have enmity to man and all his comforts. Those under Christ's government ar sweetly led with the bands of love; those under the devil's governmen are furiously driven. Oh what a comfort it is to the believer, that all the powers of darkness are under the control of the Lord Jesus! It is miracle of mercy, if those whom Satan possesses, are not brought to destruction and eternal ruin. Christ will not stay with those wh slight him; perhaps he may no more return to them, while others ar waiting for him, and glad to receive him.

38. Besought (edeeto). Imperfect: was beseeching. See on prayers, ch. v. 33. Rev.,
prayed. Beseech is used to render parakalew (Mark v. 10). See on consolation, ch. vi. 24. Parakalew, beseech, is used of prayer to God in only one instance, 2 Cor. xii. 8, where Paul besought the Lord to remove the thorn in the flesh. Frequently of requests to Christ while on earth. Deomai, to pray, often of prayer to God (Matt. ix. 38; Luke x. 2; Acts viii. 22). It is noticeable that in ver. 28, where the demons address Christ as the Son of the highest God, they say deonai, I pray. In vv. 31, 32, where they ask not to be sent away, and to be allowed to enter into the swine, they say parakalew, I beseech. The restored man, recognizing Jesus' divine power, prayed (edeito) to be with him. The distinction, however, must not be closely pressed. The two words seem to be often used interchangeably in the New Testament.

devils (demons) were gone out} (af' hou exeleluqei ta daimonia). Past perfect active of exercomai, state of completion in the past. {Prayed him} (edeeito autou). Imperfect middle, kept on begging.
